Enjoying the Christmas Season
Tuesday, November 27, 2018
Daniel and I have been talking a lot about how to really enjoy the holidays, and not just feel like we’re surviving them. It’s hard to put your finger on exactly where the excitement turns to anxiety, and the fun plans turn into burdens. It’s probably different for everyone, but for us the overwhelming feeling happens when we start overspending and over committing. We can’t buy it all, and we can’t do it all, but every year we try. This year we are trying to take it slow, start a few traditions and make lasting memories as a family of three.
The best way to simplify Christmas as a family is to prioritize what’s important to you and see what activities coincide with that. For us Christmas is about making memories as a family, and celebrating the birth of Jesus. We simply aren’t prioritizing the obligations that hinder our joy. It doesn’t mean we won’t do them, but it means we won’t stress if we don’t. They aren’t requirements for December, they don’t have to be done, and when some of them inevitably don’t work out we are okay!
For every event, tradition, and obligation, I have to consider does this help my family make memories, and celebrate the birth of Jesus?
Gifting
Christmas shopping is so stressful without a plan. Parts of gift giving definitely help make memories, and hopefully through giving we are able to celebrate the gift of Jesus. In years past we’ve basically just bought whatever we wanted for each person or gift exchange. While I love gifting, it has hit our credit card hard at Christmas. Luckily, using our credit card is a thing of the past so we had to actually have the cash for each purchase this year. That required saving, budgeting, and shopping smart. Don’t think we are Scrooge’s, we LOVE giving gifts, Daniel especially. He’s pretty much the most generous person on earth, besides my mom. We just can’t afford to go overboard anymore, and hopefully it’ll teach our kiddos about being generous with your time and love even when you don’t have any money.
Set an overall budget, based on how much you’ve saved or allocated out of your paycheck for Christmas. Make a list of every person you are buying a gift for. Choose an amount for each gift, based on the overall budget. Kids gifts are the best place to cut costs because there are so many cousins in most families that if you’re spending $30 per person, it really adds up! Also, kids don’t realize the value of something, especially if you picked it out based on their interests.
If gift giving is a major stress on your heart and wallet then take a step back and see why. Are you giving gifts because it’s an expectation? Are you spending too much? If your reasons for giving gifts don’t align with your priorities then it’s going to cause anxiety and frustration.
Christmas Parties
We love our friends and family, but there are so many of them. I never understood the stress of family get togethers until we got married and suddenly had five different Christmas parties! Our families aren’t even divorced, but we still see extended family so they take up almost every weekend of December. The only ones we HAVE to be at are immediate family, that’s who we want to make memories with and spend time with. With just one baby, we are still able to go to ALL the family Christmas parties, but eventually we won’t attend every year.
Church Events
There are so many amazing opportunities to serve during the holidays, but remember that serving your family comes first. When Daniel and I were single we spent hours a week volunteering, and when we had no kids we were able to as well. Now I completely understand why most volunteers are empty nesters, and singles. God has given parents a very specific and demanding task to serve their families. Don’t feel guilty about not being able to hand out Christmas dinners, be an usher at church, or volunteer in the nursery. If your kids are older, YES DO THOSE THINGS TOGETHER, but with an infant we just can’t. In this season, church is a place for rest and recharging. Yes we will still be involved with our life group and a part of Bible study, but we aren’t going to pile on the extra holiday volunteering that Christians feel pressured to do.
Giving and Serving
Loving others is such a beautiful part of Christmas, and can be done without signing up for ten different church events. I’ve been brainstorming ways to serve and give without over committing. A really simple way to love on your friends and family is with $5 Starbucks gift cards. You can text them straight to them if you have the app, and it is the easiest way to spread some joy. Especially for those teacher friends. If money is tight, think about what you can make! I made little Christmas cookie mix in a jar a few years ago that was really inexpensive but the perfect gift for neighbors or coworkers. Another way to serve is asking if there’s any “homework” you could do for a teacher or your church. I promise that your kids teacher has a million things to cut out, laminate, staple, and grade. Ask what you can help with!! My church even offered me a little diy take home crafting project for Christmas decorations. It was so great to be able to serve during Sawyer’s naptime. Don’t let service or expensive gifting cause you stress. Do what you can, when you can, how you can.
Take Aways
Before the season gets away from us let’s slow down and consider our priorities. If we don’t, we are sure to get caught up in the Christmas consumer culture that will leave us empty!
1. What are your priorities this Christmas?
2. How can you slow down, and focus on what matters to you
3. What obligations, burdens, and traditions can you rid yourself of to really focus on your priorities?
If you’re married, talk to your husband about what he thinks Christmas is about and how you can work together to create a home that reflects your values. If you’re single, consider how you can foster relationships with family and friends that encourage your priorities. Jesus is all about relationship. He became flesh and dwelt among us. Let’s celebrate his incarnation through the entire holiday season!
Christmas Gift Giving Tradition
Tuesday, November 20, 2018
Sawyer’s first Christmas! This is a pretty momentous Christmas for our family because it marks a transition. We are moving from our sweet married couple Christmas traditions to sharing our love for the season with children. Let’s be real, Christmas is about the kids. I don’t mean that in the traditional sense of but your children twenty presents, and hope they eventually understand the meaning of Christmas. Christmas is one of those yearly opportunities to imprint the beauty of the Gospel onto our children! The whole world is celebrating the birth of our savior even though many don’t even realize or acknowledge that aspect. Christmas is something we all remember from our childhood because life is made up of moment that shaped us. Daniel and I want Christmas to shape our children’s faith, and I’m almost certain that the least important aspect of that is presents.
We’ve decided from the start our kids will only get five gifts plus their stockings. I’ve always loved the tradition something you want, something you need, something to wear, something to read, and something to give! This guarantees that our kids aren’t only expecting new toys, but shows them that the simplest things, like a winter coat, is truly a gift!
The main reason is that the anticipation of Christmas is about the birth of Jesus. Getting gifts can enhance that excitement, but it shouldn’t be dependent upon the gifts. I do love that gifts are a physical example of Jesus being the most precious gift to us. I long to explain to them that their toys are gifts that are temporary, but the gift of Jesus is eternal!
Another reason is that we aren’t going into debt over Christmas presents. Christmas is not an unexpected expense. It happens every year, and it will always be planned for in our budget. It’s much easier to buy tons of gifts if they’re going on a credit card with no immediate responsibility for the cost. We don’t have a set amount for each person that we will stick to every year, because it may change depending on our income.
I can remember showing off all my
Christmas presents to my friends. We all compared what we got, and obviously didn’t mention any jealousy but there definitely was some. Somehow a gift a friend received turns into the only thing you ever wanted, and makes your middle school life tragically terrible because you didn’t get it… even though you got a new phone, ugg boots, tons of new clothes, and a wii. Bless my mom’s heart for being so giving and loving, but I was a BRAT. Meanwhile who knows if some of the other kids in my class got gifts at all, and if they did were they donated from the local church or hand me downs from an older sibling? I don’t want our extravagant gift giving be the reason another child thinks they are less than, unimportant, or unloved. Praise Jesus that earthly wealth and belongings have no relation to His love for us!
Something to give is probably my favorite aspect! We will let the kids choose something to give for the Christmas season. At first we will do it for them, eventually we will help them choose, and then we will completely leave it up to them. Something to give could mean choosing a child off the tree at church to buy a Christmas gift for, buying a produce basket for our sponsored child’s family in Uganda, helping send a kid to
Young Life camp, or buying blankets for the animal shelter. God definitely reveals our passions and gifting through our giving rather than receiving.
I’ll be sharing a few gift ideas for each category for a 6-12 month old, but please keep in mind that Sawyer will get ONE thing from each category. Just because I think something is a great idea, doesn’t mean I have to buy it or that she has to have it.
I also wanted to share this amazing article about the four gift tradition that comes with some Printable Gift Tags .
Merry Christmas!
I Read "Girl, Wash Your Face" So You Wouldn't Have To

“I know it sounds right, BUT is it actually true?”- Bob Goff
Sometimes we hear sayings so often that they creep into our theology. We don’t even stop to consider if they’re true, or if they just sound good. You can inspire, motivate, and encourage people without the truth. Statements can be partially biblical, but still be missing a key element that makes them TRUTH. Discernment is the key to knowing what’s true versus what makes you feel good.
Girl, Wash Your Face and the author Rachel Hollis are trending like crazy right now! She’s created a following that hangs on her every word, picture, and action like they are Gospel truth. She’s an incredible writer, businesswoman, and mother. She encourages women to stand up for themselves, chase their dreams, and not take no for an answer. What an incredible example for other women to follow. I also love how authentic she is. She has struggled, and she's willing to share those struggles in the hopes of encouraging and motivating other women. Based on what I know about her, I really think that Rachel would understand my perspective. You can respect someone without agreeing with them! That’s right, Rachel Hollis is amazing and inspirational, but I don’t agree with her about a lot of things. I realized that within the introduction of her book.
I listened to, took notes, analyzed, referred to scripture, and researched this book extensively. That might sound excruciating, but I needed to know for myself if this book was everything people say. The questions I was trying to answer going into it were- Is this book for Christian women?, Is this book supported by Biblical truths?, Would I recommend this book to Christian women to grow in their relationship with Christ?. With those questions, my sweet followers on Instagram, and my daughter in mind, I read on.
Is this book supported by Biblical truths?
No. She plainly says that “perception is reality”, “just because you believe it, doesn’t mean it’s true for everyone”, and “we decide our religion is right so every other religion must be wrong”. If you’re a Christian then you know that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through Him. John 14:6.
She also says multiple times and in multiple ways that “you are in complete control of your life”, “you are the captain of your vessel”, and other phrases that contradict the sovereignty of God. As Christians we know that God is in control. We make choices, but are by no means in charge.
Is this book for Christian women?
No. This book is written by a Christian, but not for Christians. It is published by a Christian Publisher, under the pretense of being a Christian book, but it’s doubtful that the editor, publisher, or author really intended it for Christians. If they did, then that’s an entirely different conversation to be had. I’d describe it as a self help motivational book to coach women into success and self-love through hard work and self discipline. Rachel Hollis herself says "The truth? You, and only you, are ultimately responsible for who you become and how happy you are. That's the takeaway." That sentence in itself should reveal that this book is not written for Christian women. Beth Moore put it perfectly in my devotional this morning “Without God’s intervention, we can offer only a small bandage to someone hemorrhaging from uncontrolled emotions. We may bring calm for a moment, but our efforts will have little lasting effects.” This book may be a source of motivation, encouragement, and guidance but without God it’s just temporary. That’s something Rachel misses, or chooses to ignore.
Would I recommend this book to Christian women to grow in their relationship with Christ?
No. If you have strong biblical knowledge, the gift of discernment, or are willing to fact check everything then go ahead and read it. You will definitely find some good stuff! I did. Like when she says “I studied the Gospel and finally grasped the divine knowledge that I am loved, worthy, and enough as I am! I am a child of God and that trumps everything else”. YES GIRL YOU ARE!
That’s why I’m sharing this. You are all of those things. You don’t need any more steps to become a better version of you! You don’t need half truths that intertwine the gospel and what society says. You don’t need Girl, Wash Your Face to rest in the knowledge that you are fearfully and wonderfully made. You don't have to do it all yourself. You don't have to quit diet coke to prove to yourself that you can stick to something. You don't have to constantly strive and work for success. You don't need a vision board with Beyonce and a beach house on it. All we need is Jesus.
Although I was trying to save you some time, inevitably some of you will read it for yourselves. If you read it, constantly ask “I know it sounds right, but is it actually true?”. I’ve included some scripture below that may help you in discerning truth while reading. Her words are inspirational and encouraging, but that doesn’t make them true.
Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand. Proverbs 19:21
Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Philippians 2:4
He must increase, but I must decrease. John 3:30
I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the father except through me. John 14:6
So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10
Praying for your child to LOVE the Lord
Monday, June 25, 2018
Praying for Sawyer has come easy. Daniel and I've prayed for her since before we knew we were pregnant. My prayers consisted of "please give us a child" and "give us a healthy baby." Lately I've been praying that she sleeps well, and becomes an independent confident child. All of these are real things that I will continue to pray for, but I felt like I was missing something. I received the book Praying the Scriptures For Your Children from a coworker, and started reading it recently. It hit me like a ton of bricks that the things I have been praying for are so temporary. They aren't eternal. Jodie Berndt talks about praying specific scriptures over your children. Praying the word of God over your children ensures that your prayers are aligned with God's will!
I'm starting to incorporate scriptures into my prayers for Sawyer, and would encourage every parent to do the same. Jodie's book begins with prayers for your child's salvation. Salvation trumps health, happiness, and success every time so I'm making it my number one priority in prayer. I know that the challenge lies in the time it may take for her to accept Jesus Christ! It could be 6, 10, 18, or 30 years, but I'm prepared to pray for salvation for all of my babies regardless of how long it takes.
Prayers For Your Child's Salvation
(Adapted from Jodie Berndt's book Praying the Scriptures for your Children)
Put people in Sawyer’s life who will gently instruct her, and encourage her to love you.
2 Timothy 2:25-26
Open Sawyer’s eyes to the light of the Gospel so that she will have faith in Christ.
Acts 26:18
Remind Sawyer that she is a new creation in Christ, the old has gone, the new has come.
2 Corinthians 5:17
I pray that Sawyer would confess with her mouth that Jesus is Lord, and would believe in her heart that you have raised Christ from the dead.
Romans 10:9-13
Thank you Lord for loving Sawyer so much that you gave your own Son to die for her.
John 3:16
I pray that Sawyer would put her trust in you and never be shaken.
Psalm 125:1
Join me in covering our babes in prayer!

She Reads Truth Bible
Tuesday, January 2, 2018
This holiday season has been a whirlwind of presents, parties, and food. I have had days of doing absolutely nothing, but I've also had long stretches of non stop activity. We still go to so many different family Christmas parties, and get to see all our old friends that come into town for the holidays that everyday there is something going on. Now that the holidays have slowed down, I've gotten to spend a substantial amount of time enjoying one of my favorite gifts from Christmas. Daniel and I usually go all out for Christmas, but with a baby on the way we decided to save money. My absolute favorite, and pretty inexpensive gift from him was the She Reads Truth Bible. When I saw this come out a few months ago I made Daniel look at it with me online multiple times hoping he'd get the hint! Now that I've fallen even more in love with it, I wanted to share how amazingly beautiful it is in case you are wanting a new Bible.
On the Surface
I'm going to start off pretty superficially because let's be real, I like pretty things. This Bible is pretty, and that's what has attracted so many of us to She Reads Truth. This obviously isn't the reason I spend time in scripture, but it's a reason I chose this Bible. They actually give an amazing explanation of why they spend so much time on the visual appearance at the beginning of the Bible. "This Bible is out humble attempt to honor the inherently beautiful gospel with the aesthetic beauty it deserves."A main highlight of the simple beauty of this Bible is it's hardback cover. It's simple and contemporary. It's not busy and covered in florals that you will grow out of, or plain leather that cracks and ages over time. It's sturdy, wipes clean, and won't be bent or scuffed like leather. I previously had a leather Bible and my dog ate it... I'm hoping that a hardcover discourages that.
Another beautiful aspect is the color coding based on genre. This adds multiple color schemes throughout the Bible, but it also has a specific purpose. It separates the Old Testament into the Pentateuch (laws), Historical (account of Israel), Wisdom & Poetry (philosophical literature), Major Prophets (messages from God), and Minor Prophets (messages from God). The New Testament is separated into the Gospels (life of Jesus), Church History (early church), Pauline Epistles (letters by Paul), General Epistles (specific responses to circumstances), and Apocalyptic (prophecy on the end times). These distinctions help you understand the theme of the book you are reading rather than just blindly beginning a book. No shame if you don't care about genres because most people probably don't, but this color coding does provide beautiful colors throughout the Bible!
The most breathtaking part of the Bible are the key scripture verses at the beginning of each book. I want to take a picture and share it every time I start a new book because they're so beautiful. The goal of the scriptures is to choose a passage from each book that helps to "represent the complete arc of scripture". There was a purpose behind each verse chosen, and the art that accompanies it. God is the ultimate creator which inspires His creation to be creative as well. Scripture accompanied by art speaks to the soul. An idea that I recently had, but haven't began is to memorize the key verses while I'm going through that book. Just memorizing those key verses would be an amazing start to a lifelong habit.
Going Deeper
Although this Bible is attractive on the outside, it has so many other features that make it an incredible study Bible. The first question I had before ordering it was what translations are available? Sadly they only offer one option, which is the Christian Standard Bible. I had never heard of it before. Apparently it's a really new translation, that falls somewhere between The Message and NIV. You can read comparisons at this link here to get a feel for the difference between the version you're used to. I grew up with a NKJV bible... that I never read. As soon as I accepted Christ I switched to ESV, and loved that translation all through my Bible classes in college. I was weary of switching to a version that I hadn't heard of, and that I couldn't hear a lot of feedback on because nobody I know has it yet. Despite all those concerns, it's a great translation. Easy to understand, but an accurate translation that isn't watered down.
She Reads Truth came up with some incredible reading plans that accompany each book, and a year long plan for the entire Bible. I considered started the year long plan for the new year, but honestly felt like it was too much with a baby on the way. Does that sound terrible? The plan is a little overwhelming because it requires that you read 4 chapters a day from different books of the Bible. I'm more of a one track mind type person. I prefer to read through an entire book rather than skip around, or read multiple books at a time. Also, four chapters a day would definitely cause me to read for completion rather than comprehension (hear my teacher self coming out). Realistic expectations are what keep me from getting burnt out and behind on plans. Plus I don't think God has ever been like "Hey you should have read the whole bible is 365 days instead of 892 days". I'm laughing just saying that because I know that God is pleased when we spend time with Him and in His word, not that we completed some devotional, plan, or memorized x amount of verses. All that to say that I prefer the reading plans that come with the beginning of each book. They break the book into chapters and verses to read within a week. It's less strict because it only gives you 5 sections for each week, and they're broken down into 1ish chapters each. That means each books takes a completely different amount of time to finish. For example, Hebrews would take about 3 weeks because it's 13 chapters. While 1 Timothy would only take 1 week because it's 6 chapters. The other awesome part about these reading plans is that it has a "Going Deeper" section with extra scripture that is either directly quoted or reinforces what was said in that chapter to read as well. This is awesome if you're really interested in a topic, or just want even more time in the word. These reading plans are a lot more manageable, and slow things down. I already love doing these reading plans because it's a great pace to really take your time reading the scripture, and then meditating on it.
Having devotionals throughout the Bible was very appealing to me because I always buy devotional studies, but never make it through the entire thing at once. I go back to my devotionals at different times through out the year depending on what type of season I'm in. The concept of having devotionals built in throughout my Bible had never occurred to me, but it's such an encouragement. Usually every few chapters of a book there will be a devotional positioned perfectly to encourage you to go deeper with what you've read. These are also written towards young women as the primary audience, so they really relate to me.
As a history major and biblical studies minor, I love understanding historical background, context, and where everything fits on the timeline. I get so much more out of scripture if I truly understand the when, why, and who's of a book. She Reads Truth provides a timeline at the beginning of each book that gives a detailed look at where that book falls in history. It also gives the historical background in a short summary that doesn't overload you with information, but really does put the whole book into context. It also summarizes the "Message & Purpose" of the book. This is honestly the most important part of scripture. What is God's message to me, us, the church through this book? She Reads Truth leads you to better understand God's message, and His purpose behind it. This bible also provides the significant maps needed to understand the historical locations of the New and Old Testaments. It has maps scattered throughout the books that highlight key geographical locations that relate to the time you're reading about. This is another aspect that might not interest everyone, but it definitely doesn't hurt to understand where events occurred.
I feel blessed that Daniel gifted this Bible to me for Christmas. It's one of those gifts that becomes more and more meaningful over time. If you are interested in ordering this bible I suggest using Amazon because at this point everyone has Amazon Prime free shipping, right? Use my link here, or below to order yours! I promise you won't regret it.

Love Your Husband
Monday, July 31, 2017
Happy Birthday Daniel! In honor of my sweet husband's birthday, I thought I would share a few ways that I love my husband. This is not a checklist to a perfect marriage because we certainly don't have one, and you will not be able to do all of these all the time. Know that regardless of if you do any of these things yet, God is a healer and restorer. Wherever your marriage is, God can heal wounds and restore your relationship.
1. Pray For Him
I have noticed that when I'm not taking the time to pray for Daniel that I'm a lot quicker to judge his actions and intentions. Praying for your husband will grow your marriage deeper because the focus will no longer just be you two. If you haven't been praying for your husband, try out a book like 31 Prayers for Your Husband by Jennifer Smith. I used this to get an idea of what I should be praying for him. I focus a lot on praying for his career as a firefighter. That he is safe, that God is forming him to be a leader, and that he is building relationships from which he can share Christ with his coworkers. I also pray for his relationship with God. That God would grow him and prepare him to lead our family in whatever way He takes us.
2. Encourage Him
We all struggle with doubt. Doubt about ourselves and doubt about God's plan. Whenever your husband brings up his doubts or struggles, encourage him. Remind him what scripture says. Also, encourage him to feel comfortable bringing up those doubts with you. I guarantee your husband is struggling with something, he just may not have said anything about it. The enemy wants spouses to be disconnected, and not share their hearts with each other. He wants to tear apart relationships and marriages. Don't let him.
3. Affirm Him
As wives we have the ability to build up and affirm our husband, or to tear them down. To affirm him, you have to focus on what his strengths are. What is he good at? Is it woodworking, his job in sales, building relationships, understanding the Bible, or even doing yard work? Take every chance you get to affirm him, and tell him that he is appreciated and loved. I want to encourage my husbands growth, not contribute to a lack of confidence.
4. Respect Him
Husbands deserve respect from their wives and children. God has given them authority over the family for reason. He is the leader, and as a leader he should be respected. That respect includes his decisions, opinions, abilities, and qualities. Decisions are the hardest to respect, especially if you disagree. It's possible to disagree and explain why you disagree while still respecting your husbands decision. Respect does not mean that you are a silent partner. Once your husband does make a decision, right or wrong, no good can come from nagging or complaining. God has called us to respect our husbands because it will make our marriages more glorifying to Him!
God loves us and wants our marriages to be a reflection of that love. I still struggle to do all of these things, but I can easily tell the difference in our marriage between when I am and when I'm not. I pray that you find the strength and courage to begin praying, encouraging, affirming, and respecting your husband.
xoxo,
kelsey
